Next up: Houghton City and Calumet Township

2/26/2025

Hello CRAGgy Friends,
Welcome new people!
  1. Upcoming Council meetings.
  2. What is CRAG about?
  3. New email system.
  4. News and Resources
  5. Other actions and events.
1. Upcoming local meetings
  • Tonight: Wed, Feb 26th, 5:30 pm: Houghton City Council. Houghton City Hall.
***  A resolution will be introduced opposing executive overreach *** If you live in Houghton let your representatives know you support this!
  • Friday, Feb 28, Calumet Township
The Charter Township of Calumet board meetings are held on the last Friday of each month starting at 1:00pm.
  • March 10th, 5 pm, Baraga County
When does your local city or township board meet? Let me know. Thanks to those who have shared; I am compiling a list.
2. What is CRAG about?I need help defining the focus of this group. It began from my spontaneous effort to channel my outrage. I decided to address local bodies because I see little chance of influencing our congressman.
This list has also become a channel to link various groups in the Keweenaw, and promote their activities.
What else should we do? How?
3. New email systemI have transferred this list to Keila. You will now see an unsubscribe link at the bottom. This will alleviate problems of too many bcc addresses, which lead to accusations of spam.
Please be patient while I figure out the formatting. Let me know if you have problems while this system.
4. News and resourcesLast night congress passed a budget bill that includes:
  • Cuts to Medicaid, which will severely impact hospitals and nursing homes (especially rural).
  • Cuts to food aid (SNAP).
  • Cuts to Obamacare expansion of Medicaid (federal match to state funding).
  • $4.5 trillion dollars in tax cuts.
From the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities:
The quick math on the House budget shows a stark equation: the cost of extending tax cuts for households with incomes in the top 1 percent — $1.1 trillion through 2034 — equals roughly the same amount as the proposed potential cuts for health coverage under Medicaid and food assistance under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
In Houghton County 2132 people depend on the Healthy Michigan plan; about 72% of that funding comes from the federal government.
TFN also has a good summary (with profanity).
Davis Dayen at The American Prospect actually found $2T of waste in the budget (summary); it’s not where Musk says it is.
Big picture analysis of the coup is also important. Timothy Snyder discusses the "Fraud" of Fraud. And here's a long piece by Levitski and Way on The path to American Autocracy.
5. Other actions and events.
  • Keep calling your Congressperson. Jack Bergman: (202) 225-4735
  • Keweenaw Indivisible will convene tonight (Wed, Feb 26) at the Bonefire at 6 pm for a "coalition strategy meeting". They are organizing under the national Indivisible group.
  • Houghton County Dems meet every first Wednesday, 7 pm at the Super 8.
  • Feb 28th: National 24 hour economic boycott. Instigated by The People's Union and now spread widely (and falsely attributed to Heather Cox Richardson).
Thanks for all your support
Stay Well
Sarah
